The EU law course has covered classic aspects of the legal aspects of the functioning of the EU institutions, including the Court of Justice and has dedicated special attention to the procedural and substainve aspects of the accession procedure to the EU; the lectures also covered the challenges of the enlargement as far as the cohesion policy is concerned, the need to reform the EU Treaties and the need to ensure full respect of EU values by candidate countries. At the same time, the opportunities offered by the enlargement were highlighted, including the expansion of the internal market and the strenghtening of the capacity of the Union to defend its security. This year a lecture — presentation slides — was given by Professor Roman Petrov of the Kiev-Moyla Academy. Professor Petrov discussed about the idea of accession through the war, the impact of the war in Ukraine on the security of the Union and of possible scenarios of peace deals on the basis of the positions of Ukraine, Russia and China. Professor Petrov also gave a second lecture in the context of the Prof. Casella’s course of comparative law — presentation slides. In this lecture tthe impact of the war in Ukraine on the EU enlargement policy and the solidarity shen by the EU towards Ukraine.
Finally, the lecture focused on the impact of the war on EU Common Foreign and Security Policy and possible reforms needed in the context of this policy.
21 October 2025 – Seminar: Ukraine’s Accession, Russia and the Security of the EU
Prof. Roman Petrov, Head of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence and Jean Monnet Chair in EU Law at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, delivered a seminar within the EU Law course taught by Prof. Sara Poli. The seminar explored the legal and geopolitical implications of Russia’s war against Ukraine, focusing on Ukraine’s accession process, EU enlargement, and the Union’s Common Foreign and Security Policy.

Prof. Roman Petrov delivered a second seminar within the Comparative Public Law course taught by Prof. Rino Casella. The lecture examined how the war in Ukraine has influenced the EU enlargement process and the development of the Common Foreign and Security Policy, highlighting the legal and political challenges faced by the European Union.
